Pioneering Spirit

In spite of the very real challenges that women in Hollywood face, one cannot help but have a profound appreciation for their hard-earned achievements. And though we’ve come far, there are still miles to traverse. So, I am encouraged and greatly inspired because no matter what the obstacles or how long the journey, armed with focus and determination, women always find a way to turn their dreams into reality.

Traditionally, women have taken a more circuitous route in order to work in Hollywood, and because of it, an even greater degree of creativity has been required to fulfill their artistic dreams. And that is what has fueled the women highlighted here—a lawyer, a director, a screenwriter, etc.—they are successful primarily because they have chosen to follow their calling and not simply a career.

Oftentimes, without hands on mentoring, women have had to draw inspiration from wherever they can—within or outside of their fields; from present or past heroines; from ordinary or extraordinary women —all to create a personal well of strength and set out on what I am sure many times felt like a ‘solo journey.’

We may never know the unique and particular struggles that these women have gone through to make their mark, but without a doubt, strength of purpose and character has been required of each of them. It takes commitment, perseverance, and a belief in the unseen to bring about success on any level. But with a pioneering spirit and a willingness to embark upon a journey where few, if any footsteps are seen to show the way, the future and its rich possibilities can be yours!
